The smartest trend in building construction, whether it be residential or commercial, is focusing on "net zero" or "near net zero" energy consumption.  Net zero refers to a buildings energy usage equaling no more than it either produces or can sell back to the local energy company.  Nearly 40% of all U.S. energy consumption is thanks to buildings through heating, lights, air conditioning, and miscellaneous electrical usage.   The Air Force Academy has announced its commitment to reach net zero energy use...

(http://brianallmerradionetwork.wordpress.com/2009/12/01/12-01-09-air-force-academy-aims-for-net-zero-energy-use/).  Already a leader in energy efficiency, the Air Force leads all branches of government as demonstrated by receiving four Green Power awards.  To improve the Academy's energy footprint, a focus on improving existing buildings through insulation, natural light, roofing material and high efficiency equipment and reducing fuel consumption by making over its vehicle fleet.  The vehicle aspect is interesting because there will be conversion of vehicles to hybrid, replacement with smaller vehicles and the onsite creation on-site of biodiesel from recycled oil from dining facilities.  The Academy's efforts will be a great inspiration for local homeowners, owners of commercial developments and those in the construction business.

Another interesting project in Colorado is the anticipated construction and completion of a new National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704013004574515794019780248.html)  This project illustrates a great point that is causing a major mind shift in net zero construction:  "Energy drives the design".  Typically in construction, architecture is the main force and improving energy consumption comes after the fact.  More and more energy conscious builders are being asked upfront about how to build their new home in such a way that integrates energy efficiency and sources of renewable energy.

Springsblog came across a great site that explains green building and covers many topics relevant to the average homeowner.  The site is sponsored by HGTVPro.com (http://www.hgtvpro.com/hpro/green_building/).  Looking forward to 2010, SpringsBlog plans to cover many topics related to green building.  Happy 2010!
